CAPTCHA security technology was developed with the purpose of discerning people from bots on the internet. As such, CAPTCHA helps protect websites against misuse like spam, brute force attacks, and unauthorised access.

CAPTCHA works by presenting users with a challenge that is easy enough to solve for human users, but difficult for automated programmes. Only after successfully completing the challenge, will the user get access to the website or a particular feature on the website.

Newer versions, like ReCAPTCHA v3, improve user experience by moving those challenges largely to the background.
